If you are a prospective or serving corps member, you may be wondering if your NYSC certificate will show your date of birth. This is an important question, as your date of birth can have implications for your future career and opportunities.

The answer is yes, your NYSC certificate will show your date of birth. This is a recent development, as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) announced in 2020 that it would start including the dates of birth of corps members on their discharge certificates and exclusion letters.

According to NYSC, the inclusion of the dates of birth on the certificates is a further step toward curtailing age falsification. The NYSC Director-General, Brigadier General Shuaibu Ibrahim, said that this decision was made to align with the practice of other examination bodies like WAEC and JAMB.

He said, “We have decided to include the date of birth on the certificate of national service and exclusion letter. This is just as in the case of the WAEC certificate and the NYSC Exemption Certificate. We also ensure that only those who meet the requirement are mobilized. It is a criminal offence for anyone to present a fake certificate to serve.”

The implication of this change is that corps members must ensure that their dates of birth are accurate and consistent with their records in WAEC, JAMB, and their institutions of graduation. Any discrepancy or error in the date of birth can cause problems during the mobilization process and affect the validity of the certificate.

How to Correct Your Date of Birth for NYSC

If you have a mistake or discrepancy in your date of birth, you can apply for a correction through any of these three methods:

  1. NYSC Portal: You can use the NYSC portal to correct your date of birth by purchasing a WAEC Results Check PIN from designated banks, logging into your dashboard, and clicking on the “Change Date of Birth” link. You will need to enter your WAEC verification details and submit. This method works by importing your date of birth from your WAEC profile.
  2. NYSC Orientation Camp or Secretariat: You can also make corrections at the NYSC orientation camp or secretariat by presenting necessary documents such as your NYSC Call-Up Letter, Statement of Result/Certificate of Graduation, and a sworn affidavit affirming your correct details. You are advised to do this before reaching the orientation camp.
  3. JAMB Office: Another option is to visit the nearest JAMB office and request a change in your date of birth. You will also need to inform the Students Affairs Directorate in your school about your updated date of birth. This method works by updating your JAMB profile with your correct date of birth.

It is important to address any issue with your date of birth before reaching the orientation camp, as corrections made at the camp may involve additional procedures and documentation.

NYSC emphasizes the importance of accuracy in personal information, and graduates are encouraged to follow the prescribed procedures to ensure a smooth and accurate registration process.

Conclusion

Your NYSC certificate will show your date of birth, so you need to make sure that it is correct and consistent with your other records. You can apply for a correction through any of the three methods mentioned above if you have any error or discrepancy in your date of birth. Doing so will help you avoid any problems or complications during or after your service year.
